Sustainable Tourism

Village N Life, who manage the Bay Hotel, take their sustainability efforts very seriously. They are conscious of being as green as they can in their current capacity, as well as educating staff on the principles of sustainability and eco-friendly practice and polices.

They observe the 5 key areas detailed by United Nations in their Sustainable Tourism Development roadmap, being:

  1. Sustainable economic growth
  2. Increased employment and poverty reduction
  3. Resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change
  4. Culture values, diversity and heritage
  5. Mutual understanding, peace and security.

The Bay Hotel’s sustainability/eco-friendly efforts are stated on the ‘Do Good Wall’, located by the hotel’s ATM. They help the local community by assisting the Camps Bay Football Club with greywater for their fields, while also supplying the Camps Bay Primary with greywater and borehole water.

The hotel also refurbishes old bicycles for staff to use and upcycles out-of-service products to be utilised at other properties. They use local producer Amos to supply their kitchen.

Water

The Bay Hotel has a ‘greywater’ solution in place, as well as a borehole water system, that means they are entirely self-sustainable with their water supply. All laundry water is recycled to be utilised for staff toilets and irrigation. The hotel also has its own bottling plant to bottle water for guests and all other Village N Life properties. The water systems use soft-start motors, meaning there is no electrical consumption on activation, making the process more efficient.

The hotel provides greywater to Camps Bay Football Club and Camps Bay Primary, the latter is also supplied with borehole water. There is signage in rooms to ask guests to be conscious of water consumption.

Energy

The hotel is currently working to further reduce its electricity consumption, through solar energy and smart automation, as well as continuing and developing the current teaching of initiatives to staff. They have internal and external heat pumps, timers and are converting to LED lighting.

Their water systems use soft-start motors which saves electrical consumption. Old bikes are recycled for staff to use and when trips to other properties are needed, logistic controls are in place to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle use for staff.

Waste

Plastic is collected, separated and recycled through Green Jobs. Cardboard is also collected for recycling and staff are encouraged to recycle themselves through bins placed in the office area. Condemned linen is recycled for maintenance purposes and out-of-service products are upcycled for use at other properties. The hotel also refurbishes old bikes for staff to use.

Children of all ages are welcome at the Bay Hotel.

Children over the age of 14 are considered adults and must occupy their own room. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by the parent/guardian for the full duration, while on the hotel premises.

A seasonal child sharing policy is in operation, where:

  • From 1st October to 30th April, only children under the age of 1 and between the ages of 8-14 years are welcome to share a room with 2 adults.
  • From 1st May to 30th September, children of all ages are welcome to share with 2 adults.
