This old colonial era military base has been converted into a historic preserved museum for you to take a look back into the history of Paraty. Constructed in 1793, the building was built to help protect the flow of gold from the nearby Royal Road, as well as the sugar production of the region.

During a period of decline in Paraty, the fort was in ruins until 1822 when it was rebuilt in honour of Dom Pedro I, Emperor and Perp Ethan Defender of Brazil. Nowadays, the forte stands as a reminder of Brazil’s rich history.
