Mocona Virgin Lodge by DOT Boutique, El Soberbio, Misiones Province, Argentina

Created in 1995, the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the Misiones Province, and home to the largest biodiversity in Argentina. The 250,000ha of land encompasses dense and luscious sub-tropical jungles, crystal clear trickling streams, hidden waterfalls – such as Horacio Falls – and a handful of flowing rivers and streams, including the Arroyo Yaboti Guazú, the Oveja Negra Stream, and the Uruguay River, which acts not only as a border of the reserve but as a border between Argentina and Brazil.

This range of landscapes creates the perfect home for a variety of animals, such as jaguars, pumas, ocelots, and various species of pigs and monkeys. Just under 300 species of bird have been identified, including striped owls, golden crested eagles, blue and yellow macaws, and harpies.

Yabotí Biosphere Reserve has two seasons; a tropical season which is long, humid, and hot, with tropical rain storms; and a subtropical season which is cooler but short. The tropical season roughly begins in November and lasts until late March, with average high temperatures of 29°C, accompanied by high humidity punctuated by rain showers. January tends to be the hottest month of the year, with average highs of 31°C. Although it is rainy throughout the year, the wettest month is October, heralding the beginning of the tropical season.

The subtropical season is short and usually lasts from May to August. During this time of year, the daily temperature rarely reaches above 23°C and there is less humidity, although there are still rain showers. July is the coldest month with average highs of 21°C and lows of 12°C. No matter when you choose to travel, sturdy walking shoes are advised for this terrain, and clothes which can easily be layered for warmth in the subtropical months are recommended.

Ziplining

Soar through the treetops of the forest across a 250-metre zipline over Oveja Negra Stream and Horacio Falls. Feel the wind on your face as you zoom through the air in this once-in-a-lifetime experience in the heart of nature. The ziplining experience lasts for one hour and consists of two lines.

Waterfall Abseiling

For those guests who wish to push the limits while here, waterfall abseiling is available. A slightly higher fitness level is required for guests who wish to abseil down the Horacio Falls canyon. Take a look around while you are on your way down and see the 20-metre sparkling cascade of water from the falls next to you. This activity lasts for roughly 1 hour, and includes a short walk from Moconá to the launching platform.

Hiking the Oveja Negra Path

For guests who wish to immerse themselves in the heart of the jungle, hiking the Oveja Negra Path is the perfect route. Guests will be accompanied by a knowledgeable and friendly guide who will be able to impart all their wisdom on the flora and fauna of the forest as you hike through. Following the Oveja Negra Stream guests will end up at the magnificent Horacio Falls, and will get the opportunity to have a dip in the turquoise lagoon where the stream meets the falls. This activity will last for roughly 2 hours, and is of a mid to difficult level.

Kayaking

Glide along the Yabotí Stream in one of Moconá’s kayaks, and take some time to immerse yourself in your surroundings. The waters are crystal clear, calm and shallow – perfect for a gentle kayak journey downstream. A kayaking tour will begin at the lodge, by DON pier where you will paddle down the 2000 metres until the mouth of the Yaboti meets the Uruguay River just before Brazil. Stop here a while and marvel at the surrounding Estadual Do Turvo Park before kayaking back to Moconá’s pier. For this activity, guests must know how to swim, and the duration is an estimated 2 hours.

Fogón del Mensú

For guests craving a meaningful connection with nature and the forests of Yaboti Biosphere Reserve the Fogón del Mensú is the perfect opportunity. As the sun sets, gather around the crackling bonfire and enjoy two traditional meals of the Reviro and Ticoí. As the golden light turns to dusk, and then dark, listen to the guides tell tales and myths of the region, and learn all about the land’s ancestral past. This is truly a magical experience and one suitable for all ages.

Swimming Pool

Moconá’s large, sparkling, infinity swimming pool offers guests the perfect place to relax and enjoy a gentle swim, or a refreshing dip on a warm afternoon, with sweeping views through the jungle in every direction.
