African Bush Camps Foundation

African Bush Camps Foundation is committed to sustainable development, through the creation of opportunities that empower rural communities within vulnerable wildlife areas in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia, working to create opportunities for all. Here are some of the initiatives that serve as the cornerstone of all African Bush Camps operations.

Community Empowerment

The African Bush Camp Foundation seeks to support local communities through entrepreneurship, encouraging and facilitating the production of local crafts and trades to enable sustainable incomes for people living in close proximity to protected wildlife areas. For instance, those communities partnered with the foundation will have the opportunity to produce crafted items such as gowns, jewellry and ornaments that can then be sold at one of the many African Bush Camp properties in their proximity.

This enables the growth of local economies through sustainable practices, imparts industry skills and knowledge that can be shared throughout the community. Additionally, this initiative addresses critical gaps such as accessible health care and sanitation to achieve a higher quality of life.

Conservation

The African Bush Camps conservation initiative aims to improve the perception and tolerance of wildlife in close proximity to populated areas, helping communities restore a harmonious relationship with nature for their benefit. The African Bush Camps Foundation work to implement human-wildlife conflict mitigation techniques which help local people to learn and understand innovative ways to better conserve resources whilst implementing sustainable land-use practices.

As one of Africa’s primary sources of revenue is tourism, an emphasis must naturally be placed on conserving the wildlife and eco systems that attract visitors year-round and support the growth of small-scale local economies through sustainable travel operations.

Education

Through partnering with communities in vulnerable wildlife areas, the African Bush Camp Foundation seeks to improve access to education and raise the quality of learning environments for children across South Africa. This educational and wellbeing initiative seeks to support orphaned and vulnerable children through scholarship programmes and funding tuition fees – as well as providing more holistic support through Life Skills Workshops.

In order to improve existing standards of education and general quality of life, expanding and improving local infrastructure is a priority of the foundation. Such improvements include the creation of sanitary conditions with running water and proper toilet facilities to prevent students catching water-borne diseases like typhoid or cholera which can have detrimental effects on the children’s development. To encourage the development of high-quality education, the resources to attend school must first be provided, as not to limit the prospects of children’s opportunities in later life.

Solar Powered Camp

While electricity is limited at Migration Expeditions, it is generated completely through solar power energy, allowing for permanent lighting and battery charging when needed. With no diesel-powered generators to speak of, the collective footprint is minimal, with the affect on the immediate environment is low. This simple yet rustic setup causes little detriment to the encompassing ecosystems of the Nxai Pan and present an overall sustainable model with which to operate in ecologically sensitive environment – with regards to the current scale of operations.
