Located in the Borana Conservancy, Laragai House is a cosy family home which is exclusive and luxurious. Surrounded by luscious and colourful gardens, guests can place themselves in the very heart of the conservancy. With the house being completely at their disposal, and with a total capacity of 16 people, this house is the perfect location for large family groups or groups of friends. A wide range of activities are on offer from Laragai House, guests can explore the Borana Conservancy on horse, foot or paddle board and if an afternoons relaxation is what you’re looking for guests can relax with a massage or a quick dip in the swimming pool.
Laragai House, Kenya
Situated in Borana Conservancy, Laragai is in the prime location to be able to spot lion, elephant, cheetah, hyaena, jackal, slender mongoose, bush pig, elephant, zebra and many more. Due to the diverse landscapes of arid plains, luscious grasslands and emerald swamps this ares is a paradise for birds with pelican, egret, heron, ostrich and flamingo filling their air with their calls. The conservancy is also home to the original Pride Rock, which served as inspiration for Disneys The Lion King.
Guests can access Laragai House by flying into Lewa Downs airstrip which is an approximately 50 minute drive from the house. Private charters can land at Borana Airstrip, 10 minutes away from the house.

The seasons in the Borana Conservancy are subject to change however usually April, May and November see the most rainfall. Although, if guests are wanting to see new life, animals give birth and wildflowers bloom then April and May are the best times to go. A warm jacket is advised for cooler mornings and evenings with lightweight, loose clothing advised for daytime activities. Due to the rains Laragai is shut in November.
A spacious and bright master bedroom is the focal point of Lucilla’s Wing. A large, comfortable double bed with crisp bed linens sits in the centre of a room facing wide windows, affording an amazing view of Ololokwe Mountain which can be enjoyed from the comfort of the bed. High thatched ceilings and polished wooden floors ground the room and bring a sense of the outside nature in and the windows let natural, bright light flood the room.
The ensuite bathroom comes complete with a shower and a large, deep bathtub set next to a window that offers panoramic views of the landscape whilst guests relax and have a soak. Guests can relax and wind down on their private sundowners deck, taking in the outstanding vista.
Valentine’s room is an authentic, rustic style bedroom. With a comfortable, four-poster king size double bed, a cosy sofa and a high, exposed thatch ceiling, guests will feel at home and relaxed in this space. Wooden framed windows line the walls and offer unparalleled views across the diverse landscapes of the conservancy. The ensuite comes complete with a shower and bath with a view. Close to the homely main living room guests may find this a perfect family unit as the room is adjacent to a large double room with ensuite, called Kibaka’s room.
Georges Wing is intended to be used as a family unit, as the master room is connected to two smaller bedrooms that share a bathroom. The master room is large and spacious, with cosy armchairs a large double bed and windows covering one side of the room. These windows offer panoramic views of the Laragai waterhole, during the day filling the room with bright light and during the evening filling the room with the warm tones of the setting sun. Polished wooden floors and high thatch ceilings add a feeling of authenticity to the room and a soft colour palette make the space comfortable and welcoming.
The Cedar wing is also suitable for families or larger groups as it contains a large double room and ensuite as well as two queen size rooms with their own bathrooms. Stone walls throughout these rooms create a sense of rustic luxury, with warm coloured bed linens and large windows filling the rooms with bright light. Polished floors are dotted with authentic rugs and exposed thatch ceilings add depth and space to the rooms. Settle down with a cup of tea or coffee in the master bedroom and marvel at the stunning views over the luscious Laragai gardens and expansive horizon.
The dining and lounge area of Laragai House are cosy and welcoming. Guests can relax down to dinner and enjoy fresh, locally sourced food from Kabati Regenerative Farm. Traditional English breakfasts, buffet lunches and delicious three-course dinners can all be catered to specific dietary needs and fit in with the healthy and homely style cuisine.
Enjoy a traditional sundowner on Pride Rock, which inspired Disney’s The Lion King. Raise a toast to the incredible Kenyan bush and take in the outstanding view of the horizon from up on your perch.

Head out with one of the rangers on foot early in the morning to help track the local rhino and learn more about the species. This is a great way to explore the African bush whilst also understanding the need for the conservation and protection of these species.
Since the 1970s horseback safaris have been popular in Kenya. Guests can saddle up and explore the Borana Conservancy on horse from one of the two stables; Ngare Ndare Stables offers beginner horses and the Borana Stables can tailor towards more experienced riders.
For a unique experience guests can try a spot of stand up paddle-boarding on the dam. Not only is this a fun activity for all members of the family, it also helps strengthen your core and balance so you can enjoy gliding effortlessly on the water whilst getting a gentle work out too.
Guests can explore the Borana Conservancy on foot with a highly experienced guide. This offers a more intimate way to explore the surrounding area, and guests can appreciate the smaller things such as micro-ecosystems and animals tracks. The guide will be more than happy to share their knowledge on the local wildlife and traditional uses of the flora and fauna.
Guests can go on a day trip to the close by Ngare Ndare Forest. The forest is 13,000 acres and full of wildlife from large mammals such as elephants to small birds such as the little egret. There is a canopy walkway hanging 40 feet above the ground which ends in a viewing platform that offers unparalleled views of a natural spring and the dense forest. Guests may stumble across a natural pool of clear blue water from the glaciers on Mount Kenya and which are an excellent spot to swim and cool off in.
With a dam locate within the Borana Conservancy, guests can try their hand at some catch-and-release fishing. This is the perfect activity for guests with children who want to learn more about the wildlife within the conservancy.
Close by Laragai House is Waitabit Farm. Here, guests can see first hand where their food is coming from, and can help to pick it. A tour of the farm is an excellent activity for the whole family and can enhance your culinary experience.

For the more adrenaline seeking guests, the Borana Conservancy can be explored on quad bikes. Guests can explore more land than on foot and satisfy their sense of adventure at the same time.
For guests wanting to spend the afternoon relaxing at the house, stress relieving massages are available as well as a large, sparkling swimming pool to help cool off in the hot afternoons. Guests can spend some time playing tennis on the tennis court, in the games room or keep fit in the house gym.
Laragai House is family run by the Dyer family who, over the generations, have always been dedicated to conservation. They have been focused on “education, poverty alleviation, employment, health, habitat management and wildlife conservation.” Recently 21 black rhinos were relocated to the Borana Conservancy giving them a safe home where they’ll be safe from poaching.
“The Seven Elephants Tree Nursery” is another project they have running, which helps reforestation by producing 30,000 trees annually. To improve health and education in the local areas the Borana Mobile Clinic educates locals on family planning and AIDS awareness and Borana’s own education support programme helps many local children through school.
