Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge

The Tambopata Suites at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica are a collection of tasteful yet rustic cabanas in the heart of the rainforest, where guests can feel immersed in the verdant landscape and tropical plants with the sounds of singing birds around them. Positioned high above the forest ground, the Inkaterra Canopy Tree House can be reached by the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. From the treehouse, guests can enjoy bird’s eye views across the Peruvian South Eastern Amazon and observe bird life from an entirely different perspective. Guests can enjoy a complimentary drink whilst taking in the awe-inspiring views then sit down for a light meal before embarking on a night walk. Trips to the Inkaterra Canopy Tree House include an overnight stay, and guests will need to give advance notice if they wish to enjoy this unique experience.

Located just 5 minutes down the river, the Inkaterra Canopy Centre is available for guests to use free of charge and offers wi-fi, an AV system, bathrooms, a coffee lounge and food options. The classic Amazonic architecture of the centre, traditional thatched roof and panoramic views of the forest make this the perfect hideaway for guests seeking peace and quiet whilst wanting the convenience of home comforts. The centre can also be used for meetings, events and functions.

Trail System
Explore the expanse of the Amazon rainforest surrounding the hotel on this 4.5-mile trail. A private tour guide will talk explorers through the complex ecosystem of the rainforest, different tree and wildlife types, uses of the rainforest and the impact of the human footprint on the rainforest. As you trek through this botanical wonderland, you will be lucky enough to spot birds, lizards, insects and many animals unique to this particular area.

Rainforest Garden
Venture around the lodge trails in the hotel’s rainforest gardens. Explore the native garden surrounding the cabanas, now a well-established patch of tropical plants and flowers started by locals over a decade ago. A private hotel guide will teach you all about the different flower types and the process of gardening in a tropical environment as well as the many uses and benefits of the plants and trees.

Twilight River
Sail down the Madre de Dios River and watch the sun set over this natural paradise. Observe the transformation from day to night and learn all about the change in forest patterns and animal life once the sun has set. Lucky guests may even spot owls, nightjars and other animals which emerge exclusively at night.

Rainforest by Night
Venture through the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve at dusk and experience a whole new side to the rainforest. Enjoy a guided tour and learn all about what occurs in the forest once the sun has set; from nocturnal animals who come out to play to animals who adjust their behaviour, especially for this time of day.

Wet Lands
Embark on an adventure to the renowned wetlands system in the 200-metre boardwalk. Journey down the wooden footpath, raised one metre above the wetland where you can observe the amphibians, reptiles, snakes, birds and mammals which lie surrounding the walkway. Learn all about the varieties of animal species and see firsthand the wetland ecosystem whilst learning all about its benefits and uses.

Gamitana Creek
Enjoy all the jungle has to offer and embark on a walk to Gamitana Creek. Join a private tour guide and walk one and a half hours away from your cabana, exploring the varieties of wildlife, trees and plants along the way. After the walk, board a canoe and journey one hour downstream to the Gamitana Model Farm. There you will be able to have a go at making your own plantain flour!

Lake Sandoval
Hop on board a motorised canoe and journey 30 minutes downriver to the Tambopata National Reserve. There, guests can embark on a 3km trek along an exhilarating nature walk to Lake Sandoval. From there, guests can choose to board a canoe and leisurely sail down the river, appreciating the abundance of wildlife, including red howler monkeys, macaws, prehistoric hoatzins and much more.

Inkaterra Canopy Walkway
Head out onto a 15-minute walk along the trail where you will reach the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Centre. Here, visitors will be briefed all about the history of the project, what it aims to achieve and the vision. Following on, guests will venture to the first tower at 95 feet above the forest floor which leads on to viewing platforms where the expansive natural world can be viewed from a height. Observe the forest from a whole new perspective and catch a glimpse of exotic birds including toucans, woodpeckers and trogons.

Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & Anaconda Walk
At the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Centre, guests can ascend to the first tower, 95 feet above the forest floor which leads on to viewing platforms where the expansive natural world can be viewed from a height. Observe the forest from a whole new perspective and look out for exotic birds before taking the 30-minute Anaconda Walk over a slightly raised wooden footbridge above the wetlands. This walk will allow you to experience this healthy and unique ecosystem whilst observing the wildlife residing in the wetland.

Hacienda Concepcion
Enjoy the lush ecosystem and botanical garden over at the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción and learn from the hotel’s expert guide all about the beautiful wildlife, plants and trees surrounding you as well as native medicinal uses. On the way back to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, guests can take a trip to a nearby lake to observe some more wildlife, finishing the day with a trip to the cacao and rubber tree plantation.

Embark on a short motorboat ride from the banks of the Madre de Dios River and then a walk to Lake Sandoval. At Lake Sandoval, you will board a wooden canoe and glide down the oxbow lake feasting your eyes on the underwater life and surrounding lush vegetation. Next, you will hike to the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion and enjoy a light lunch followed by a visit to a nearby garden, home to exotic plants and trees, some of which are used for medicinal purposes. A private tour guide will talk you through the 200 medicinal plants on display and you may have the chance to practise some native archery.

Lake Valencia
A full day excursion beginning with a two-hour journey downstream by motorised boat to the renowned Valencia oxbow lake. Once you arrive, enjoy the tranquillity of the area from the comfort of the boat. Observe and learn about the wildlife and have a go at fishing some of the unusual varieties of fish the lake is home to. For lunch, enjoy the fish you caught that morning with some delicious sides provided by the hotel. Then embark on a one hour walk around the Brazilian nut fields before boarding the boat to return to the lodge.

Ornithology
Guests shall depart the lodge in the morning, accompanied by an expert guide, and travel by either boat or on foot to some of the rainforest’s most renowned bird-watching spots. The guide will assist you in looking out for your preferred bird varieties. Break from the activity for lunch back at the lodge then head back out for more bird watching until sunset.

Since Inkaterra was established, more than 4,000 local community members have been trained and equipped with skills to enhance employability and heighten their chances of leading a sustainable way of life. Career opportunities with the hotel group are made available to locals and often career progression is made accessible.

Through research, “A total of 814 bird species, 365 ant species, 313 butterfly species, and over 100 mammal species have been inventoried within hotel grounds and surroundings.’ Additionally, 28 undiscovered species have been recorded including 19 orchids, 2 bromeliads, 1 tropical vine, 5 amphibians, and 1 butterfly.

The NGO Inkaterra Association develops and manages initiatives on biodiversity conservation. Initiatives include; a canopy walkway, a bridge system in the rainforest canopy to enable wildlife observation, the largest native orchid collection in the world and many more. In 1989, the hotel brand was the first enterprise to become carbon neutral, ensuring the hotel mitigated the effects of its activities on the natural world.
