Jimenoa Waterfall – Jimenoa is a beautiful waterfall at the corner of a massive rock formation, looking almost unworldly. Before the hike to this waterfall, you will pass an interesting bean plantation and have a chance to overlook the waterfall from the very top of the lively green hills. The stunning view from the entrance to the start of the hike is well worth the visit itself. Swimming in the falls is allowed at certain times of the year. The waterfall is a 30-minute hike down and 45-minute hike up a beautiful path of copper red soil and pine trees.
Baiguate Waterfall – Baiguate Waterfall is breath-taking, its shallow waters empty into the Baiguate River. You can walk under the waterfall during the dryer season, the water is shallow at around 2 feet high. The highlight of this experience is the horse ride there which is a wonderful adventure through the roads of Jarabacoa town and then into the lush woods.
Salto Secreto (Secret Waterfall) – After a drive towards the town of Manabao, you will leave your transport at a cute storefront store, where a friendly elderly lady sells homemade ice cream and herbal medicinal teas. You will then hike through a finca and at one point walk through a river. Finally, you’ll reach the awe-inspiring Salto Secreto Waterfall, which you will likely have all to yourself.
Explore Pico Duarte, the highest mountain peak in the Caribbean, rising at 3,087 metres (10,125 feet), Pico Duarte is tucked amid the two national parks of Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez, and is reachable in two or three-day excursions depending on the chosen route. The two-day Jarabacoa-Manabao-La Ciénaga-Compartición-Valle de Lilís-Pico Duarte route is the most popular one. All hiking routes guarantee amazing views of tropical, pine, mountain broadleaf, and cloud forests.
An official guide and mules for food and bags must be arranged through your hotel or at the La Ciénaga government campsite, at the entrance to Armando Bermúdez National Park. Along the hike, nights are spent at the Compartición or Valle de Lilís official camping grounds. The hike requires a decent level of fitness and endurance–come prepared with hiking boots and layers of clothing for the cold temperatures. Hiking to Pico Duarte is definitely one for the Caribbean traveller’s bucket list.
