The British Virgin Islands were originally discovered by the explorer, Christopher Columbus before Spanish and Dutch settlers began to make their homes here. Tortola later became a den for pirates, with famous captains such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd using the island as a base. The selection of well-hidden coves meant that the captains could conceal their ships, and this is how the nearby Smuggler’s Cove received its name.

Fort Recovery is the oldest landmark in Tortola. It was once a 17th Dutch fort, built on low ground and with close proximity to the ocean. This is unusual for a fort, and so it is believed that the structure was erected in order to guard a freshwater pond – which once would have been a crucial resource as the island has no rivers and limited access to fresh water. The fort likely served as a barracks for wounded soldiers in conflicts between the Dutch and Spanish settlers, which is where it got the name Recovery. The fort was eventually abandoned and was later turned into the site for a resort, which opened in 1969.
