Discover the Chamberlain Bridge, located in the heart of the capital city of Bridgetown. The bridge was originally a swing bridge constructed between 1865 and 1872 and was named after Joseph Chamberlain, the British Secretary of State for the Colonies. In 2006 the old swing bridge, which was manually operated, was replaced with a modern lift bridge.
The Chamberlain Bridge separates the inner and outer basins of the Careenage which is a safe harbour for many catamarans, fishing boats and other pleasure craft. Most craft remain in the outer basin except during hurricanes and high seas when several are moved to the inner basin. To the west of the Chamberlain Bridge is the Bridgetown boardwalk, a wooden boardwalk that runs along the waterfront, and is well worth a stroll.
At the southern end of the Bridge is the Independence Arch which commemorates Barbados’ independence from Britain. Also at this end is the Independence Square park which is a lovely place to relax and watch the boats coming in and out of the careenage. Looking across the Chamberlain Bridge from this vantage point you will also see the lovely historic Parliament Buildings.
Take a walk along the relaxing stretch of the boardwalk and experience the epitome of island bliss. The sound of the waves has a calming effect that puts your mind at ease, creating the perfect tropical atmosphere. The boardwalk is a great place to observe wildlife; As part of one of the major nesting beaches of the endangered Hawksbill turtles, you are likely to spot several nesting females coming onto shore at night in hopes to lay their eggs. Various types of seabirds and other marine animals can be observed in the water or on the small beaches dotted along the boardwalk.
At other times a livelier and more upbeat scene is requisite when the need to let go and let loose arises there are a host of places to pop in have a good time. The very popular ‘stop-off’ points on the boardwalk include Blakeys, Chill Cafe Bar and Grill, Tapas, Naru, Blue Pineapple and Lord of the Wings along with many others. The mouth-watering food served at each of these upscale or cosy restaurants have their own unique styles of cuisine, the dining experience can be quiet and elegant in some places or laid back, yet other places like the beach shack themed Chill Cafe Bar and grill have great party-like vibes.
The Richard Haynes Boardwalk offers a refreshing atmosphere and pleasant experience. It is a place where a wonderful mixture of individuals makes use of the space every day for leisure, exercise or recreation.
