San Rafael Spa

One of the characteristic features of San Rafael Spa is that it combines the oceanic waves of the Caribbean Sea with a pond created by the mouth of San Rafael River. This pebble and loose stone beach is very popular among surfers. At weekends, it is possible to dance to the Dominican music that plays at the local restaurants. The river’s cascade is one of the main tourist attractions, and has been transformed into a natural spa. The Spa, as well as the beach, are enjoyed by both Dominicans and tourists. The beach’s waters are crystalline and turquoise, and is covered with little white river stones.

Jaragua National Park

Jaragua National Park is one of the Dominican Republic’s most significant natural reserves, located on the Southern tip of Pedernales. Jaragua National Park encompasses diverse ecosystems–from sea to land, lagoon to isles, Taino caves, the stunning Bahía de Las Águilas virgin coastline, and the secluded offshore isles of Beata and Alto Velo. The Park is part of the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Dominican Republic.

The wildlife and fauna are a match in diversity. Fauna spotted at the Park range from manatees, and turtles that nest on its beaches– hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea. At least 400 species of flora have also been identified, including tropical forests, cacti, mangroves, and wetlands where over 130 species of birds thrive, 10 of which are endemic.

On your visit you’re bound to see large flocks of American flamingos, white crowned pigeons, as well as white ibis, osprey, back-crowned night herons, roseate spoonbills, and blue herons, among others. Iguanas also call the park home, including endangered species too. For a truly astonishing experience, and a real sense of the beauty that the Dominican Republic homes, a trip to the Jaragua National Park needs to be at the top of your list.

Horseback riding in the mountains of Paraiso

Enjoy a horseback riding trip into the mountains of Paraiso. You will visit small farms where bananas, coffee, cocoa, and avocados are grown. The trip will start by heading to Paraiso, where the horses will be waiting for you. Then you’ll ascend to the municipality ‘Villa Nizao’, on the way up you’ll encounter small communities of Dominican and Haitian farmers. Almost throughout the whole route panoramic views over the coast of Paraiso can be admired, so make sure to take some time to marvel at the beauties of nature.

The path back down leads through the fresh and clear waters of the river Nizaito, and past a greenhouse where pepper is grown. You will also have the chance to see into the greenhouse and chat with the farmers.
