The patrols and guides that RIU funds for the turtles benefits the local community by generation employment for the patrols and tours. It also helps raise awareness in the community especially in schools through education programs.

RIU helps protect the biodiversity of the beach by protecting the turtle nests and preserving their habitat under the supervision of NGOs. They raise awareness among guests through activities and visits accompanied by authorised guides and turtle release sessions. They finance night patrols on the beaches and volunteer camps during the egg-laying and hatching season. RIU also supports the humpback whale protection programme and helps raise awareness through information about it.

RIU has taken sustainable measures to ensure the responsible use and management of water. Minimising waste and maximising reuse is possible through the use of water saving and recycling systems in the hotel such as double flush push buttons on toilets, mixing-valve taps in showers that improve temperature regulation, efficient showers and toilets with flow reducers and timers, and the replacement of bathtubs with showers in hotels. RIU also installed moisture detectors, drip and sprinkler irrigation systems with pressure limitations, and progressive implementation of a double circuit to reuse soapy water in toilets.

RIU reduces packaging waste by bulk buying products, and where possible they choose products that are packaged in recyclable or biodegradable materials. RIU hotels have facilities for the separation of waste – there’s a special protocol for the disposal of hazardous waste. There are waste bins in the hotel public areas to dispose of paper, glass, plastic, and organic waste.

To help save energy the hotel uses LED and low energy lighting and replaced electrical appliances with high-efficiency versions. Geothermal air conditioning systems improve energy efficiency by 400% and the natural gas boilers generate cleaner energy than the diesel boilers the hotels used to use. The automatic disconnection devices for air conditioning when a door or window is left open helps to avoid unnecessary energy use. Solar lighting is used in garden areas, and solar thermal energy is used for hot water systems.

To reduce emissions the hotel makes use of less polluting systems, regarding air conditioning, the top contributor to their carbon footprint. They replaced their diesel boilers with ones that use natural gas and replaced their machinery and appliances with less polluting and more efficient ones.
