Cape Town benefits from its Mediterranean climate and well-defined seasons, and allows for a variety of seasonal activities, but also seasonal produce. The summer months from November to February are warm and dry with high winds which create the perfect environment for sports such as kite surfing, with average lows of 17°C and highs of 24°C.
Much of the rain falls through the winter months of May to August, but with average lows of 10°C and highs of 20°C, the days are still mild. The rainy season brings the natural beauty of Cape Town back to life, rejuvenating the indigenous forests and botanical gardens, and feeding the waterfalls.
Spring brings a vast array of wildflowers, which carpet the dunes, fields, farms and wetlands in an abundance of colour by the indigenous Cape Floral. The best time to see this wondrous spectacle is between September and October.

Whilst the prison at Robben Island is most infamous due to the high profile prisoners it once held, including former South African Presidents, including Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. the island has a much older and equally dark history. The island has been home to a leper colony, a mental institution and army and naval bases. Robben Island can trace its turbulent history all the way back to the 1300s.
These days the prison is a museum, with the tour allowing visitors access to both the warden’s house and the limestone quarry, which in some ways are as much a part of the prison as the tiny cells. Prisoners were forced to work the limestone quarry, even after the rock was no longer needed on the mainland, part of their punishment being to chisel at the unforgiving rock in the oppressive elements.
The MORE Family Collection started the More Community Foundation in 2002. Then known as the Bhubezi Trust, the aim was to set up a corporate social investment organisation.
Since 2002, the MORE Community Foundation has aided several local communities through self-sustainable projects which aim to improve the living standards and future prospects of people living in these communities. The Foundation aims to achieve this through 4 ‘Core Pillars’. These are Education & Skills Development, Enterprise Development, Living Standards and Clean Water.
Ongoing projects include providing digital education through the Huntington Digital Learning Campus and creating boreholes in Huntington Village for sufficient access to clean drinking water. The Soul Food project accepts donations from guests and staff, as a way to provide tangible help to communities in need of it. The MORE Community Foundation is also a patron of the Frida Hartley Shelter, which houses and supports vulnerable women and their families.
The “Get Your Hands Dirty Programme” encourages guests to help in these projects which aim to address “local needs around education, health and environment, and infrastructure.”
MORE Family Collection is “committed to promoting conservation through education and raising awareness.”
These aims are realised through direct action, such as by being active members of programmes such as the Nakavango Conservation Programme, which is a volunteering programme established to protect and preserve the Victorian Falls Private Game Reserve and to develop the nearby Woodlands Village. This programme gives its volunteers the opportunity to “learn about and make personal contributions to: conservation management and research on the reserve, community development projects, and the maintenance of Nakavango Conservation Centre and its sustainable green operations.”
MORE Family Collection has also established a field guide college called NJ MORE Field Guide College. This is Field Guide Association of South Africa endorsed, and is used to help train new guides who will be the future of the conservation programme. This programme has a track record of training guides who “have a vast knowledge of the environment, a passion for guiding, a dedication to teaching people about our extraordinary natural heritage, and inspiring them to do their part to protect it.”
The use of energy in MORE Family Collection properties is minimised, both in buildings and transportation, and a shift to renewable sources is currently being implemented. As part of this initiative, MORE Family Collection has:
- Installed solar PV energy systems at Marataba Mountain Lodge and their Johannesburg Support Office, reducing dependence on grid electricity and diesel energy.
- Monitor driving behaviours and monitor vehicle movement to further reduce unnecessary emissions.
- Implemented the Eldo App, which helps to monitor and manage the use of electricity.
- Tracking their carbon footprint monthly, and minimising carbon emissions where possible.
The use of water is minimised whilst maintaining quality. This means that:
- Water consumption is monitored daily
- Several More Family properties have greywater systems to irrigate the landscape, this minimises the use of potable water
- Rainwater harvesting is installed at Cape Cadogan and More Quarters in Cape Town
- Water awareness programmes are being implemented for staff
All waste is recycled and reused where possible, minimising the amount that goes to landfill.
- All MORE lodges and hotels have implemented responsible waste management and recycling systems
- Hazardous materials such as lightbulbs, ink cartridges and batteries are responsibly disposed of
- On-site bottling of purified water minimises the use of single-use plastics
- Food suppliers are encouraged to reduce their plastic packaging and at Lion Sands Game Reserve their major food supplier delivers in reusable crates, with the minimum amount of plastic
Guest and staff food is healthy, local, seasonal, vegetarian-forward, ethically sourced and culturally relevant.
- Moves have been made towards a group-wide “farm-to-table” menu, and a fully functional vegetable garden has already been implemented at Stanley and Livingstone Boutique Hotel. Other properties seek out local farmers for fresh produce
- Their Group Sustainable Food standard requires all commonly regarded “unethical” foods such as veal and foie gras are avoided, and sustainable seafood sourcing is required
- Plans are in place to strengthen their vegan offerings across all their properties
Materials utilised in the buildings, (construction and FF&E) and operations meet sustainability criteria.
- Materials are locally sourced wherever possible to promote the local economy and reduce the environmental impact of transportation, with an aspiration to limit the supply chain to within a 50km radius wherever possible
- MORE’s Responsible Procurement Policy includes a focus on the ‘end of life’ of materials to assist with following sustainable practices – for example being fully recyclable in South Africa
- Environmentally-friendly cleaning materials and amenities are in place throughout their properties
- Plastic straws have been eliminated, single-use plastic reduced and only sustainably sourced wood is used
