Cape Town benefits from its Mediterranean climate and well-defined seasons, and allows for a variety of seasonal activities, but also seasonal produce. The summer months from November to February are warm and dry with high winds which create the perfect environment for sports such as kite surfing, with average lows of 17°C and highs of 24°C.

Much of the rain falls through the winter months of May to August, but with average lows of 10°C and highs of 20°C, the days are still mild. The rainy season brings the natural beauty of Cape Town back to life, rejuvenating the indigenous forests and botanical gardens, and feeding the waterfalls.

Spring brings a vast array of wildflowers, which carpet the dunes, fields, farms and wetlands in an abundance of colour by the indigenous Cape Floral. The best time to see this wondrous spectacle is between September and October.

Robben Island

Whilst the prison at Robben Island is most infamous due to the high-profile prisoners it once held, including former South African Presidents, including Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. the island has a much older and equally dark history. The island has been home to a leper colony, a mental institution and army and naval bases. Robben Island can trace its turbulent history all the way back to the 1300s.

These days the prison is a museum, with the tour allowing visitors access to both the warden’s house and the limestone quarry, which in some ways are as much a part of the prison as the tiny cells. Prisoners were forced to work the limestone quarry, even after the rock was no longer needed on the mainland, part of their punishment being to chisel at the unforgiving rock in the oppressive elements.

Table Mountain National Park

Experience the beauty of the national park with panoramic views from the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, or hike one of the trails to the top if you’re feeling more adventurous! The Table Mountain National Park is expansive, stretching from the tip of Cape Peninsula all the way to the city of Cape Town, it offers an abundance of activities and stunning experiences for travellers. Visit the Boulder penguin colony, or hike through Tokai Park and experience over 440 different plant species, 110 of which are threatened by extinction or have become extinct in the wider ecosystem.

Kloof Street

The thriving, bustling heart of Cape Towns’ independent scene, Kloof Street boasts an immense diversity of businesses, from eateries and bars to hair salons, wellness centres and galleries with something for everyone. For an unforgettable dining experience and night like no other, head to The Bombay Bicycle Club, the neighbourhood’s favourite hangout. Headed by the Madame Zingara group, the menu is carefully curated and the eclectic decor is only surpassed by the eclectic clientele.

A coffee shop by day and beer garden by night, Yours Truly has become an institution in Cape Town. The Kloof Street venue is where it all began, and visitors can watch the world go by from under the Jacaranda trees or wait until the evening when local DJs and musicians take to the stage.

Education

Students who study hotel management are employed on 6-month internship programs that cover a multitude of areas within the hotel in order to gain practical, first-hand knowledge of the hospitality industry. They are integrated into the operation of the hotel in much the same way as permanent employees so that they experience the real work environment.

Trainees are managed by a senior operational manager and tailor-made programs are set for each student according to school requirements, as well as individual preferences. Evaluation from both school and hotel ensures students’ optimal growth and development.

Staff Welfare

Cape Grace has partnered with ICAS to create a Staff Wellness program which provides free, professional and confidential assistance to all members and staff and their immediate families for a variety of life’s challenges, from financial troubles to mental health struggles.

Social Initiatives

Cape Grace invests in the wider Cape Town community through corporate social investments in a number of initiatives.

Cape Grace sponsors a house in Thornton’s SOS Children’s Village which provides a stable and loving home for orphaned or abandoned children. SOS Children’s Village promotes family-based child care, as children placed in the homes are raised alongside other children of various ages in a family home, where the children stay until they reach independence. Each village is made up of 10 to 15 of these homes. SOS Children’s Village are world leaders in alternative child care, and was one of the leading organisations in the development of Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children which was formally adopted by the United Nations as a key framework for its work.

Cape Grace also currently supports two initiatives through Uthando Projects, a South Africa-based charity which works with and contributes to a collection of community development projects and charitable institutions. Cape Grace contributes to Masizakhe Youth Art Project which was founded to support young people, especially in disadvantaged areas. The project seeks to develop young people’s talent in creative practices, such as dance, music, drama and literature.

The hotel also supports Eziko Cooking and Catering School by providing internships in the hotel’s kitchen to the top students of the school. Eziko is a community-based project located in Langa which acts as an entry-level skills provider in catering and hospitality.

Recycling

At Cape Grace, waste is sorted through the on-site waste management sorting area which minimises contributions to landfill and dumping, and waste kitchen oil is transformed into biodiesel.

Disused hardware is donated to an E-waste company and environmentally sensitive bulbs and batteries are disposed of responsibly.

Water

Since 2016, and in light of the water shortage crisis in Cape Town that began in 2017, Cape Grace has implemented various methods to ensure water consumption is regulated and water waste is minimised.

Low-flow shower heads have been installed in the guest ensuite and aerators have been fitted on all taps throughout the hotel, along with pressure-reducing valves on the hot and cold water feed into each individual room. Screens have been placed on the water towers to protect the water from the heat and prevent evaporation as best as possible.

The outdoor swimming pool at Cape Grace has been treated with an oil-based liquid treatment called Heatsavr, a liquid pool blanket non-toxic and not harmful to the environment. It acts as a natural oil insulation, which minimises water evaporation. Municipal water is not used to top up the pool.

Cape Grace’s external laundry supplier has invested in a water recycling system which serves to drastically reduce the amount of water used in the laundry service. This system allows the laundry service to reuse and purify between 75 to 80% of their water continuously, minimising their dependence on municipal water.

Energy Efficiency

All lightbulbs throughout Cape Grace have been replaced with LED bulbs which require less than their standard counterparts. As the property boasts large windows throughout, importance is placed on using natural light throughout the day, and creating airflow to minimise the need for air-conditioning.

Children of all ages are welcome at Cape Grace. The hotel has a wide array of child-friendly activities, including gingerbread decorating, Africa-themed story time and a wide selection of games, consoles and books available for children.

A professional child-minding service is available by arrangement.
