Temple of the Tooth Relic

With the Earl’s Regency Hotel being so close to the Kandy, there are numerous varied things to do during your stay. One of the more memorable might be to visit the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa, grab a glimpse of the relic of the tooth of Lord Buddha. Housed in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, the whole experience of walking through the World Heritage Site is not one to be missed. If you visit in July and August, you can even witness the Esala Perahera, an annual procession in which the relic is carried through the streets accompanied by dancers and drummers.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

About 5km west of the city of Kandy are the royal Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Renowned for its collection of orchids, among 4000 other species of plant, these gardens are a sight to behold. Dating back as far as 1371 and covering 147 acres, there is plenty of flora and fable to get stuck into. Once reserved only for Kandyan royalty, this spectacle is now open to the public, so swan down the avenue of royal palm trees and enjoy a picnic under the giant Javan fig tree on the great lawn.

Ambuluwawa Temple and Biodiversity Complex

Ambuluwawa is a biodiversity complex and Sri Lanka’s first multi-religious sanctuary situated in the central highlands of the country. At the core of the complex is the belief in unity and connection, and climbing the astonishing Awbuluwawa Trigonometrical Station visitors can see the Buddhist temple, Hindu Kovil, Muslim mosque and Christian Church below. The area is also extremely diverse, with evergreen forests, blossoming flower plants, medicinal species and many endemic animal species. It truly is a sight to behold, as each of the places of worship, as well as the plants and animals thriving around them, have been built with each other in mind.
