Luang Prabang & the Far North
Well-preserved examples of unique French-Indochinese architecture, over 33 golden temples and an exceptional, varied cuisine make Luang Prabang, without doubt, the country’s most enchanting town. Nestled at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan River, favourite day trips include the stunning, turquoise Kuang Si Waterfall and the sacred, riverside Pak Ou Caves. Luang Prabang also serves as a great base for trekking adventures into the scenic highlands of the remote north, home to many hill tribe villages.
Vientiane
Those who have visited Vientiane in the past will notice the massive change with new developments popping up all over the city, but to everybody else, the country’s largest city still feels more like a sleepy town than the capital city. Nestled on a bend of the Mekong River and with just a few sites of note, days here are best spent at the city’s many excellent cafes, strolling through markets and sunset drinks along the riverfront.
Upon arrival to Luang Prabang, your guide will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel.
As the sun sets, participate in a one-hour walking tour through the vibrant night market of Luang Prabang, open from dusk daily. Browse through the colourful textiles, quilts, carvings, basketry, ceramics, clothing, and handmade paper, authentically crafted by the locals of Laos. Conclude your first day in Luang Prabang as you and your partner delight in a romantic evening dinner back at your hotel.
After breakfast, spend your morning at your own leisure, whether utilising the facilities at the hotel or personally exploring the city yourself.
Around 01:00pm, a private guide will pick up at the hotel for a half day tour to embrace the atmosphere of Luang Prabang. The tour passes through the National Museum, as well as the former Royal Palace, where relics from Laos’ royalist past are displayed. Visit the UNESCO heritage Heuan Chan house, an authentic 19th century longhouse on tree-trunk stilts that acts as a small museum regarding the lifestyle of Luang Prabang.
The tour continues onto a local cafe, a handicraft centre to discover the regions bamboo crafts and a cooking class where you can learn about the creation of Lao desserts. The park is the folly of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, a monk, shaman and mystic of Hinduism and Buddhism. Untrained in sculpture, Sulilat and his students created more than two-hundred cement statues filled with cryptic symbols of horror and fantasy. Watch out for the skeleton thin Buddhas, a giant pumpkin with a demon head, a gigantic forty-metre-long reclining Buddha, or a statue of Shiva waving his menacing eight arms of swords! Located on the fringes of the park are some food and drink shops, where you can pick up a picnic lunch to eat by the banks of the river before heading back to the hotel.
